Megan Blacksmith
Hello there. Welcome to the becoming zesty podcast. Megan here. I just got to interview Kelly today I have Kelly wellness. Kelly is a colleague of mine, she is in the James Wedmore world with me in our next level business by design program. And it has been so fun to watch her over the last year in how quickly this girl has just leapfrogged over and over. And I wanted to interview her because we are all about success and finding success. And I wanted to hear I want you to be listening to the little things she says the little nuances of how she approached business and just really went from being a teacher to having a full blown membership with over 1200 people in it right now monthly subscribers in her membership where she helps people with binge eating. It’s been very cool to watch her and I have done a breakthrough session with her. So it was very interesting to hear a little bit more of the backstory of what that did and how that was because I don’t always know, you don’t always know how something changes for someone after the fact for those of you who work with people, sometimes you find out and they tell you and sometimes you just don’t know. So stay tuned, you’re going to hear how some major shifts in the way she was thinking allowed her to easily and go way way way beyond replace her teaching salary. And just really embrace being what James talks about as the digital CEO. just embracing the numbers and learning things online and having an online group and a community. So I cannot wait for you to listen to this episode, I decided to throw out last minute in the middle of the episode that we’re going to offer. We have a breakthrough session that we do that we have done. Rarely because normally we work with people inside of a minimum of a three month program or they’ve come to one of our seven day trainings. So in order to do one on one with us, that’s usually required. And we’re we’ve decided to offer these breakthrough sessions. This is for first time customers only, you can do a one hour breakthrough session with us that’s normally a $500 value for $197. You’re gonna check the link in the show notes to see if there are spots left. And also depending on when you’re listening to this, please just email us support at becomings st.com To see if we’re still honoring this offer. I know though, the one other time we did this, they filled up very quickly. So we are super excited to get on the phone with you. We love to hear when you’re working through things and what you’re actually working through. I had someone tell me recently who I’ve known for a really long time. And I don’t think we’ve we’ve been Facebook friends and haven’t chatted because we haven’t lived in the same place for over 10 years. And she said yeah, I listened to the podcast every week. And I had no idea. Y’all we don’t know. I don’t know if you’re listening unless you reach out we really want Make this a two way conversation. We love to hear what’s going on. Like we love your updates. Good, bad, indifferent, whatever it is, please come on over to at becoming zesty on Instagram, or just email us at any time. We really, really love to just hear what’s going on. Alright, let’s go listen to what the amazing Kelly has to say. Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the becoming zesty podcast. I have a special guest here with me today. We’ve been chatting, and I’m so excited for this. Hi, Kelly.

Kelly Lyons
Hi, how are you? I’m so excited to be here.

Megan Blacksmith
Me too. So I already read Kelly’s bio. So you know about her, although I just want to share a little backstory about us. We know each other through the James Wedmore world of next level, and business by design. And I asked her to come on the podcast because I have watched crazy amounts of changes in you in the last year and more, I’m sure. And how fast you implement, get stuff done. And that was what I really wanted to pull out today. Kelly is start. And maybe you don’t even know necessarily what you’re doing but start to pull out our belief is that, you know, success leaves clues. And we can start to what are the patterns? What are people doing when they make these huge quantum leaps? And we’ll get into what they were for you. But first of all, tell everybody, what you’re who you serve and what your amazing membership is. So we have a little backstory of of what area of business you’re in.

Kelly Lyons
Yeah, awesome. Well, first things first, I am so excited. And I’m so happy I met you and not to get all, you know, into this life. But the way you’ve helped me I think has been a huge, huge reason for my success. And what’s happened over the last year. But a little bit about what I do is I help women stop binge eating and stop over eating. So they can be in control around food. And the way I help them mainly is through my membership, food freedom society. So it’s a membership where women can come together have this community, and they get support through me and my coaches, they get weekly coaching calls, they get content, and it’s a one stop shop to fully finish this food struggle for good. And the reason why I did this membership and pour my heart and soul into it is because when I was struggling, it was a very isolating thing to deal with. And not many people understand it, especially people around us. So I see that so much of their success comes from having a community of women who get it and I wanted to create something that I wish I had when I struggled back in the day. So that’s pretty much it. And we’ve had so much growth, so many incredible results. i Every single day I have to wake up and pinch myself because I still can’t believe this is what I get to do.

Megan Blacksmith
And you were a teacher before Correct. I

Kelly Lyons
was a physical education and health teacher for 10 years. I was a fitness instructor. I was a personal trainer. I was a coach, I did everything in like the health and wellness field. And aside from doing everything working all the time, 12 hour days, easy. Plus, I mean 1416 It was it was just the norm this grind hustle, nothing to show for it was this like way I live for so long.

Megan Blacksmith
Okay, cool. That is what I’d love to highlight especially is the difference in where you were and what you were doing to now because that we work with a lot of people who have amazing gifts, or they’re great coaches, and they’re still, you know, like Iowa as I was still in a corporate job, or they want to make that jump. So hearing the story we have few people who’ve worked we’ve worked with who were teachers and came over to the coaching world or the online space where they’re teaching something and you can offer while you have but too many, right? But too many so and it’s been really fun to watch you on social media. Oh,

Kelly Lyons
thank you. Yeah, I do I love I love social media and not in the sense of like, I’m very adamant in the ways that I scroll but I think posting and being so open that all I want to do is be the person that I wish I had taught when I was struggling and I was so deep in this I would have done anything to see someone like me be like, Hey, I see you it’s normal. This is this is not a youth thing. Let’s actually fix it together. i And that’s that’s the vibe and the energy I try to bring every single day when I’m when I’m trying to help people.

Megan Blacksmith
Was it easy for you to put yourself out there and be visible in the beginning?

Kelly Lyons
That’s such a good question. No, sometimes if I want to like take a trip down memory lane I will scroll up Killing of my Instagram. And I was so afraid. Well, a couple things. One, I was afraid to put my face out there. So you’ll see it’s just all like quotes, like no, Kelly, just none of me. And I thought everything had to be perfect. And now I am very lucky and very fortunate that my best friend is also an entrepreneur. She’s a photographer. So when I started, she was like, Yeah, let’s do it, we’ll come over, and I’ll take brand photos, and I had this thing that like, everything had to be perfect, right. And I think to putting myself out there, being afraid of not only being judged, being made fun of being whatever, but like, it’s almost like in the beginning, you start to live two separate lives for like people that you know, on a personal level, they’re like, Wow, I never knew you had this struggle. And like, I was afraid that people like from high school, are gonna come out and say something. And I was shocked. Because when I started, I said, You know what, if I’m going to do this, I really need to do this. And I want to say like a month or two in, I talked about it on my personal Instagram, like the pictures of me with my family and the people that I grew up with and the amount of support that I got. And how many people said, Wow, I wish I had the guts to help people with a problem that I had. And that kind of showed me like, you know what, one, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks to the My biggest fear is completely not based on fact. And it’s completely not true. And three, like, I am actually taking a step towards the thing that I want so bad, where other people aren’t able to take that step, even though that’s what they want to so like, I’m on to something. So in the beginning it was, but I decided that I just had to keep taking a small step, every single day get uncomfortable a little bit each day. And the thing that made you uncomfortable yesterday, you’re not going to give a crap about it today, because you’re on to something new. And that’s how you, you built. Right. And I’m kind of going on a rant, but I tend to do that. But you know, something else is in the beginning. A lot of people in my life that I love, were like, wow, I can never do that. I can never do that. Okay, great. So don’t do it. But Is anyone saying that now? No. They’re now saying, Well, how did you do that? And you know, and yeah, if people judge me or make fun of me, whatever, okay, guess what I am living the life of my dreams and my family’s dreams. And on top of that, I’m helping 1000s of women. So you do you? I’ll do me Have a wonderful day. And that’s your, but your mindset really only changes around that when you start taking action.

Megan Blacksmith
Did that change the most in the last year? Because I feel like you had a quantum leap. Right, really from the beginning from a year ago. Till now?

Kelly Lyons
Yeah, I will say that in the health and wellness space. And I’m sure you can totally relate to this. It is really scary to put yourself out there and say I believe in something because the people are gonna come because everybody has different experiences. All the Diet Rules are completely controversial, you know, and then you get to a point you’re like, I don’t even know what to freakin eat. So for a little bit, I was just very vanilla saying the general things, right? And it wasn’t till I put out what I actually believe in and yes, it totally rubbed people, some people the wrong way. When that happened, my people came because I would hear things like, Oh my God, finally somebody is saying this, this is exactly how I felt. I’ve been looking for you blah, blah, blah. And I had this fear that the people, quote unquote, no idea who they are just the people. Were gonna come with their pitchforks. And I remember I put a video on Tiktok really like polarizing saying my stance about you know why the pros and cons of intuitive eating, right and I had these fears that so many people were gonna come at me. And my fears came to life because two people tagged these really, really big accounts. And guess what those accounts did nothing. Right? So my fear was like, Oh my God, here they come. Here they come. Nothing happened. Nothing happened. And even if something didn’t happen, I would still be sitting here with you having this podcast. So when I found the guts to actually say what I believe in that is when everything completely exploded.

Megan Blacksmith
Oh, that’s such a good nugget.

Kelly Lyons
Yes, it was scary. But now I think the people that find me they are so bought in because They know and this is the mentality that I have. This is what I believe in, I am here to support you. Whether you agree with me or not, I am here for you, I support you, I want the best for you, in whatever space you believe in whatever, whatever way of eating or nutrition aspect Do you want to focus on? But my people are the people that I meant to help and they are so bought in right from the jump because I had the courage to say what I actually wanted to say, rather than being this vanilla person that I was for a really long time.

Megan Blacksmith
Oh, I love that. I hope everyone listening just hears that they can take right? Just want one next step one step a little bit more uncomfortable. You don’t have to jump totally out of the box that you’re in, but, and I

Kelly Lyons
Oh, can I say one more thing. Like I think something that’s really helpful too. And you know, James always says this to us that action creates clarity, we can sit there with a blinking cursor, thinking of all the things we have to do and feel insanely overwhelmed, especially if you’re just starting out, right. But action creates clarity, meaning like you do one thing, and that is going to give you what you want or the lesson you need to take a new direction. So I have had that burned in my brain. So now, I don’t spend a lot of times looking at a blinking cursor or thinking of a decision or going back and forth. Because I know, the only way I’m going to get closer to what actually works is by doing something. And I think that’s where a lot of people get stuck.

Megan Blacksmith
And also, I think being willing and able to learn from anywhere in anything, because I know so I we’ve been an online business, a good amount, longer venue, right? It’s been like 12 years. And I sat next to the Bvd lie or one of our events. And I was like, hey, Kelly, can you like show me how to do this Instagram. She literally was like showing me tips and tricks and stuff. And I’m using your strategies all the time. And so I was like, I see you’re doing something different. And I know like, often for people who’ve been around for a while in a certain area, it’s like it used to work a certain way. And so you can just kind of forget that, like the world is changing. And so that’s why I go into those rooms, is like, there’s new things, there’s people to learn from all the time. It’s always changing.

Kelly Lyons
People to learn from there’s always changing. And I want to be in the room, where I am just constantly taking things in and learning and just having this open mind because you don’t know what you don’t know. Right. So I can sit here and notice that, you know, help the people I can and by the way, sitting next to you is so much fun, but help the people I can you know, but also, there is a whole realm of things that are not even on my wavelength. And that those are the people that I want to be talking to, those are the people I want to be listening to. Those are the people that are on stage. And I’m sitting there with my notebook and me just opening up to all these people in these relationships I made like meeting you. And you know, our group of friends and James and his coaches, I would not be where I am without coming in with an open mind saying like, Hey, I am made for so much more. All I want to do is learn and I just want to be a sponge. And then I can take that one step towards that. Rather than sit in my own little bubble thinking I know everything and getting nowhere.

Megan Blacksmith
Right. And so just for everyone to fully understand the amount of transformation you had last year, out of hundreds of us that were in next level, there was a video contest where we send in a video for a breakthrough of the year and then you were was the one of eight to begin with. That spoke.

Kelly Lyons
I think it was seven I believe it was seven or eight. I’m not sure but yeah, this Okay

Megan Blacksmith
So then our whole community voted on those. And then Kelly was chosen and Scott to speak at BBT ally with almost 1000 people on stage. And spoiler alert, won the breakthrough of the year. So one the whole thing, which was was it $20,000

Kelly Lyons
It was $20,000 it was this incredible mastermind that we all got to go to in Sedona that I just got back from and I you know, it was right around the holidays. So what was it like the first weekend in December? Yeah, December. Yep. And I’m at my my family’s for Christmas. And you know, not many people or two people like came up to me asking about it. And they’re like, oh my god, you want so much money? And I was like, Well, yeah, I did get a big grand prize. I’m like, but the craziest thing to me and the thing that means the most to me is I will never forget how miserable I was and doing the things that I was told that I was supposed To be doing being a teacher working hard, grinding, just working for my pension, all those things, and I got tired of it. And what a year, a year and a half later, I’m telling my story to 1000s of people on stage that is, by far, the biggest, the biggest gift for me every day, I think about it. And if I ever need like a pump up, I just watch my speech to remind myself what I’m actually capable of, and not even me, what we all are capable of. Right? Like, I got to be up there. So everybody could see wow, I’m going to be like her one day, right? And watching other people like watching people in the mastermind and people that are ahead of me, they’re up there. So I get to be like, Wow, I can’t wait to be like her one day and just continuously showing other people what you’re capable of, if you put yourself in the rooms, take action and just do small, little things.

Megan Blacksmith
The What do you think I know, it’s hard to say, because you’re not everybody else. But what we were talking about James is like not, you know, lots of people go through my program and don’t implement or do what you do. So what do you think it was for you like it? Was there a driving factor with their belief? Or do you have any insight as to like, what you notice you do differently?

Kelly Lyons
In the sense of starting as an entrepreneur, or where I’m at now? Because I feel like it’s kind of a different?

Megan Blacksmith
Well, I guess I was just thinking back on the last year of what did you do differently in that room to get to where you are.

Kelly Lyons
I love that I think one I know that I’m going to be successful. And that’s not me walking around cocky with like this, like, you know, my chest puffed out saying I’m better than everyone. But I know this deep inner knowing that it is all working for me, it is all going to work out and that I’m the only one who can do something about it. Right. And I think I have really, really focused on gratitude this past year. Every person that comes in every launch, every person that I meet, it’s just like, I feel like I’m a little kid in the candy store where I’m like, wow, I cannot believe I’m sitting next to Megan blacksmith and we’re just be guessing this whole time right? In this conference or, wow, well, two weeks ago, or a weekend ago, whatever it is, I’m doing bugging in Sedona, on a Wednesday, where I would have been working for jobs back in the day are like, Wow, I can’t believe I got to meet this person and just how blessed. And I don’t think luck is the right word, but how fortunate I am. Because I’m doing all these things. And I think having that gratitude, and just realizing like, Okay, I’m watching this grow, I’m spending more time with my family and all these little things that we don’t recognize. And we take for granted. Having that has increased in kind of like laser focused my attention on the positives and the good things. And I think that has really, really helped me expand.

Megan Blacksmith
And then how about now so you said it’s a little bit different now.

Kelly Lyons
So it’s interesting, because in the beginning, you know, you do this, because it’s like, you want to get away from something, right? Obviously, you want to help millions of people. But for me, it’s like, no, I want the I want the time freedom. I want the financial freedom, I want more time with my family. Now, I am at that point, right. And I think now the biggest thing is, well, I am still finding the driving factor. But I think just knowing that what I’m capable of and the proof of this and that success, like you said, it does leave clues. And instead of looking for proof, and then being like oh, it’s all it’s all gonna the rug is gonna come out from under me, right? It’s looking for proven saying wow, you know, like you did that. Look at where else we’re gonna go, right? And I don’t have that underlying one. Like, I need to get away from teaching but that underlying up, everything’s gonna go away. And when you don’t have that fear, everything just comes a lot quicker. And I think also to not having that fear. It’s given me a lot more wiggle room in the sense of taking risks in business and not like crazy ones, but it’s like, okay, let’s scale this let’s start getting into ads so I can reach more people and knowing that okay, when I’m building everything builds around me and I think something else I’ve really been working on too is working on myself and my the inner work and I’m getting into like meditating and working on regulating my nervous system and all these things because I am learning from other people that when you focus on you, your business grows in the way that you are able to handle.

Megan Blacksmith
And you have two small children, right?

Kelly Lyons
I do, oh my gosh, my son is going to be four in a couple of days. And I have a daughter, who’s will be two in June. So she’s like, 2020, ish, months, 21 months?

Megan Blacksmith
And just how have you been able to so you’ve built this with to I just want to highlight that because I also started my business when I had, you know, a 12 month old and was still working corporate job. So I just want to remind people that there is a way to do it when you really want it. But what have you done? How have you made that work? What how have you worked around the kids schedule?

Kelly Lyons
Well, it’s been fun, it is a little bit of a challenge, but at the same time, you’re doing it for them. And so the way we’ve really done it is, well, my son is in pre K now, but just to give you a little bit of background of how insane everything was, my son was born March of 2020, a week after the world ended. And me starting this business was driven by him because I was not ready to go back to work. So this idea and this notion of like I am meant for more I am meant for more and me finally acting on it, I truly believe was because I stepped into motherhood. So that’s one, I joined BBD. And then I went into labor the same day with my second so like one way Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, I, I joined BBD. And then I went to the hospital for it was false labor. So I was sent back home. But yeah, I was having crazy contractions like, so really just jumped right in. But especially in the beginning, I worked around naptimes, they went to bed and I would work and it is a little as you grow, it does get a little bit more and more difficult. But as you grow, too, I now have a team to support me. But just focusing on like, Hey, you can actually do this. But you have to be focusing on the right things. Like in the beginning, I can’t even tell you how many times I would like change my color palette or like be in Canva working on graphics. When it’s like no, there’s actually more things that matter that can bring in people that can call your people and those are the things to focus on. But the problem is, sometimes they’re the scariest thing. So it’s like you have to do it. But if you get stuck, you’re just going to be spinning your wheels thinking you’re working when you’re actually not.

Megan Blacksmith
Yeah, Yes. That That right there. Yeah. Okay, so I know that lots of things have shifted, what are you most excited about? Like what’s coming up with the it could be business or life, but what’s what’s the next best thing happening? Next thing?

Kelly Lyons
You know? It’s really funny you say that actually, when I was in Sedona, one of the things that I was talking about, and James and I were having a conversation and you’re he’s like, you are just getting acclimated to this life, and to your success. Because think about it, like I spent years of my life, hustling and being broke, and doing all the things right. And now it’s like, Huh, okay, I have 1000s of members, I get to support. But I have a lot more time and my kids are home and I’m home and, you know, so honestly, I think right now I’m just taking it slow and enjoying. And that’s hard. Because as an entrepreneur, you are like, go go go, you we are driven, we are motivated. And now it’s just like, Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do. So you know, I’m really enjoying my podcasts. I’m loving networking. I’m loving supporting people I’m actually working on bringing growing my team which is even greater, but I think the biggest thing is like, just enjoying like my son for his birthday. We’re taking him to a waterpark on a Monday. No problem. Yeah, we’ll go on a Monday and it’s just like, experiencing these really wonderful things and being okay. With just like taking it slow.

Megan Blacksmith
That’s amazing. Yeah, everybody, Kelly, you’re telling your podcast definitely have to come check out your social media because it’s so fun.

Kelly Lyons
Oh, you’re so sweet. Um, yeah. So my Instagram. You can find me on Instagram and Tiktok at Kelly l wellness. And my podcast is the food freedom society podcast. And there is an incredible, amazing episode with Megan at talking about how our brain runs the show. So yeah, we definitely have to include that in there so they can get more of you because that was honestly my highlight my most rated or top rated winner. recross the I don’t even know what these hotspots words are the most downloaded by far.

Megan Blacksmith
Oh, wow. Exciting article. Yeah, it’s like my thought was a really fun conversation.

Kelly Lyons
Oh fun.

Megan Blacksmith
You know certain people are like you ask really good questions, pull out the good stuff and like doesn’t necessarily come out on your own podcast right?

Kelly Lyons
Pretty sure I cried. As usual. I’m a crier, everybody.

Megan Blacksmith
Maybe I’ll pull up that video for the real I make for like crying I so appreciate you being here. I know that it’s just listening to the thought process or listening to like those small tweaks in the gratitude or how you how you’re looking at things now I know that’s what makes the biggest difference. So that’s really what I’m hoping everybody pulled out of this. And obviously, if binge eating is something you’re you are struggling with, please go check out her amazing membership. Just check out all the things.

Kelly Lyons
Awesome, Megan, this has been amazing. Thank you so much for having me.

Megan Blacksmith
Thank you so much for being here.
